On March 13, 2019, in association with the Stonewall Teulon Tribune and the Stonewall Heritage Committee, I am launching a fundraising effort that will donate up to $15,000 towards preserving the historic kiln site at Stonewall Quarry Park.

Over the summer and fall of 2018, I was exploring the province looking to capture photos for an upcoming book showcasing Manitoba. Now residing in Winnipeg, I focused my efforts on the Interlake. Growing up in Stonewall and spending a lot of spare time near Matlock, I am quite familiar with the area. One day late in the fall, I timed my trip back to Winnipeg to pass by Stonewall Quarry Park about 90 minutes before sunset. I scouted the area for a composition of the kilns that I liked, then waited for the light to hit magic hour. I decided to shoot it from a distance and include as much of the fall colours as possible. Patience paid off and when the sun lowered in the sky, the kilns were surrounded by an impressive palette of green, blue, orange and gold. In February 2019, this photo was selected out of thousands of submissions to appear in the book MANITOBA BY MANITOBA: Images of the Province by Its Citizens being published by McNally Robinson Booksellers.

To contribute to help preserve the kilns, I am producing an exclusive series of 16” x 12” prints of this shot titled Stonewall Quarry Sunset. Each print will be numbered out of 150, matted and framed. My goal is to sell all of the prints at $150 each and donate up to $15,000. The remaining funds will cover the costs of producing the framed prints. Online sales will launch at 46fps.com on March 13, 2019 (credit card only). Prints will also be available for purchase at the Stonewall Teulon Tribune office, Stonewall Quarry Park, and McLeod House (all local sales are cheque only). Online orders are available for local pick up at the Tribune office.

The foundation of Stonewall was made in those kilns. Whether it was the limestone that forms the exteriors of the town’s oldest buildings, or the hard work of the quarry workers and their families, both were important parts of building the town. The kilns have been standing since the early 19th century, but due to degradation over time their future is limited.  I recognize the importance of identity and preserving history, especially a symbol so important to the community. With this initiative I would like to help preserve and pay tribute to the iconic towers at the end of Main Street in Stonewall.
